NCsoft will announce today that Aion: Tower of Eternity will launch in North America on September 22. The European launch will follow several days later, on September 25. The company has been working on Aion for years now, and the fantasy MMO launched in South Korea in November of last year and China this April. Aion is arguably one of the most anticipated MMORPG releases in the recent months.
The game is set in a unique fantasy realm where players are almost angelic beings. In fact, each character has wings that allow them a chance to fight from the air. Imagine the world being set on the interior of a planet, with the northern and southern hemispheres split apart from one another, floating in some magical ether. So when the inhabitants of one hemisphere look up in the sky, they see the other hemisphere looming above them. Aion will represent arguably the largest subscription-based MMO launch of the year, although 2009 has been relatively quiet in terms in comparison to 2008. Last year, EA launched Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning, and Funcom launched Age of Conan: Hyborian Adventures. However, subscription-based MMOs seem to be a minority, as the free-to-play market has exploded. Such games require a percentage of the users to purchase optional micro transactions for revenue. Subscription games such as Aion tend to feature more lavish production values, but you pay for them.
